Today on the way home from work I met Dave. Actually I drove by Dave who was sitting on the side of the road in front of Burger King. He held a sign that read "homeless". I've seen Dave several times and driven right by him, always feeling that pang of guilt as I tried to ignore the inner working of the Holy Spirit. Well today was no different except that as I drove by and the pang of guilt and thousands of questions that just pop into my head telling me why I couldn't help, I ignored. Turning around in the middle of a busy street during rush hour, I drove back and parked my car. I sent up a prayer to God basically saying "ok Lord, this is on you, because I have no idea what I'm doing," and approached Dave. I sat down beside him, still holding his sign and asked him if I could buy him dinner. He said "yes" and we popped into Burger King which was right there. I did ask him if he wanted Taco Bell because that was close by also, but he chose BK and off we went. Inside the resturant, I said go ahead and order whatever you want (first mistake) luckily I had my allowance with me (long story), and he ordered three number ones. I asked him, who was all the food for, and he mentioned that his wife and daughter lived in the woods behind KMart and it was for them. We gathered the food bags, and I drove him around to the back of KMart and into the woods we went where I say a mini tent city with 6 other people there. I introduced myself, and asked if there were any immediate needs that I could help out with and left. I did return later carrying some ice for their coolers which I noticed on my first trip. I just wanted to start witnessing to them and tell them about the love of God but I didn't. Something inside said, "no, gain their trust, and serve them." I still don't know what I am doing, but I can't wait to I can return tomorrow and talk to Dave who changed my life forever.....I pray for a humble, serving heart, and ask that God would guard my spirit and keep me focused on Him and not on myself.
